Stephen Coates

Stephen is a Past President of IIA Australia (IIA-Aust), Immediate Past President of the Asian Confederation of Institutes of Internal Auditors (ACIIA), and a former member and now special adviser to the Institute of Internal Auditors International Internal Audit Standards Board (IIASB). His early work experience was as a Chief Audit Executive, as well as a Partner in a Big 4 professional services firm.
Stephen now focuses his efforts across Asia and the Pacific working with business leaders, industry groups, and internal audit professionals to strengthen and enhance their representation of the assurance profession. He has had a connection with Vietnam since 2019 and lives in Ha Long. He was instrumental in establishing The Institute of internal Auditors – Vietnam in 2023.
With a strong assurance and advisory skill set and a background as an experienced internal audit professional, he advises governments, leading companies, and not-for-profit organisations on protecting and enhancing organisational value, and shares what good assurance capability looks like.
He is currently an independent director for several organisations, as well as chairing many audit & risk committees. Stephen is open to new Vietnam independent director appointments.
